Wine Types & Styles

From Vine to Glass

Generally speaking, wine falls under 5 basic types. Red wine, white wine, Rosê, sparkling and fortified which most of us winos would have tried and enjoyed in our life. When it comes to the style within each wine type, there is a surprising number of differences, each determined by elements such as grape variety, region and how the winemaker creates the wine.

So let’s look at it this way, wines made from Chardonnay, Semillon or other white wine grape varieties can be the same “type” but have different styles. The style of the wine can be assessed through taste or the label will even give you a little hint… “Dry, full-bodied shiraz or crispy, elegant Riesling”.

A chardonnay from Margaret River is the same type as one from somewhere in Yarra Valley, however, the style is so different. This in turn makes it so interesting as no matter where you go around your town, city, country or the world, no two wines are the same and that’s the beauty of wine.

Cheers to that!
