Grape Growing

From Vine to Glass

To get to the grapes you have to start with the grapevine, and with more than sixty different species of grapevine, the majority of the world’s wine grape production stems from one type, the Vitis Vinifera.
Being a perennial plant, the grapevine will grow or bloom during the spring-summer months and die back during autumn and winter, to then repeat its cycle the following spring. Without meticulous pruning yearly, grapevines will naturally grow into bushy shrubs/trees so pruning the vines yearly help the vines stay focused on growing amazing grapes for wine.

Some life comes back to the vine around September/October when bussing occurs. During this time the buds are delicate but will continue to grow slowly into the foliage.
For us in the southern hemisphere, February to May is our harvesting season, with everyone in the winery and vineyard working around the clock to get those grapes picked! After some months have passed, the leaves will lose their colour, start to fall off and the cycle begins again.

It’s a wonderful life a little grape has.

Cheers to that!
