The 2013 Ottelia Shiraz is sourced from vineyards in Mount Benson with an average vine age of 14 years, which cropped at 7 tonnes per hectare. The 2 parcels of wine were vinified separately, blended in July 2013, then matured in a combination of 20% new French oak and 80% 5 year old French oak. The wine was blended for bottling in June 2014.
Mount Benson has developed it’s own style of delicate, cool-climate, maritime-influenced wines which have received critical acclaim by wine professionals and are gradually gaining consumer awareness. Proximity to the Southern Ocean and the shallow terra soils combine to provide an excellent viticultural environment.
The 2013 Mount Benson Vintage produced high quality fruit in which Shiraz was a standout. Favourable weather through the growing season, with generally mild, coastal conditions was punctuated by several hotter than average days during summer. Ideal conditions towards the end of March ensured that the fruit fully ripened and allowed optimal harvest flavour parameters.ANALYSIS AT HARVEST: Be 13.3 to 14.0 pH 3.51 to 3.77 Acid 5.8 to 7.4 g/l Harvest Date 29th March to 13th April BOTTLED WINE ANALYSIS: Alcohol 13.6% pH 3.47 Acid 6.9 g/l Sugar < 1.0 g/l Bottled June 2014 TASTING NOTES NOSE: Poached plum & cherry combine with pepper & spice with attractive vanilla oak lift.
